Folk Art Line with gourd engravers is the initial result of a project called Quonakuy (to give each other mutually in Quechua) which Wu Editions has undertaken with diverse forms of creative expression of our Andean and Amazonian communities which are susceptible of being applied or transcribed to the graphic media by the own creators.
In an effort to contribute to the contemporary development of the National Arts and Crafts of Peru, we invited renowned gourd engravers (master craftsmen in an ancient tradition who carve detailed designs on gourds) from the central Andes to our contemporary workshop and developed these exciting prints.
The gourd engravers learned a new technique for a new type of support a metal plate or a sheet of acetate which would then serve directly as the printing matrix to stamp the design on paper.
One of the most traditional creative expressions of the Peruvian Andes suddenly made its appearance as an extraordinary series of modern prints. Our Folk Art Line is the beginning of a new era for an ancient craft, now for you to see on beautifully executed prints on paper.
Wu Ediciones is a fairtrade business promoting the works of talented Peruvian artists to help them improve their standard of living and adapting their art to the demands of the new millenium.
