Gourd engravers are today mainly concentrated in Cochas Chico and Grande, in Huancayo in the central Andes of Peru. Although latecomers to the tradition of gourd engraving, in the early XXth century, the technique was adopted by them from Ayacucho and then transmitted from generation to generation, evolving an exquisite filigree of flowers and foliage as their style.

Each year a gourd engraver is awarded a very coveted prize among them called the Inti Raymi Award.


Artisans work not individually but as close family unit. The designs are started by one artist and then helped by their spouses or family depending on the drawing.

Pedro Osores , who is married to Reyna Núñez, won the Inti Raymi award in 1997, and is author of prints like Siembra and Selva.

Delia Poma, married to Ciro Núñez, won the award in 1996 and the International Award in 1997.

Florencio Sanabria won the Inti Raymi in 1998 and is married to Elena Núñez.
